Trevor Blyth - My Story
We are all born with awe and wonder, our creative imaginations limitless, without boundaries, however most of us are drawn into occupations of economic necessity where the need for artistic expression is suppressed.
Luckily I never lost that creative spark throughout my “working” life, constantly drawing, writing and applying my artistic expressiveness whenever I could into my workplace situations.
In childhood I was captivated by the amazing “x-ray” paintings on bark by our indigenous artists in northern Australia, which, like Aboriginal art generally across our wide continent, make reference to the laws, legends and spiritual beliefs of our original inhabitants.
This early influence blended perfectly with my subsequent lifelong connection to Nature in our stunning Australian environment through my camping, fishing, surfing, scuba diving, hiking and kayaking activities.
The ancient splendour of our land, astonishing stories from Australia’s history before and after occupation by the British invaders and an interest in tribal cultures across our planet are influences that have informed my work as an artist.
I was born in Perth, and after working and raising a family, we moved to live in Mandurah as our most loved West Australian destination so we could be absorbed into its amazing natural environment.
In 2001 I started exhibiting in group exhibitions around WA and in 2011 joined Mandurah’s art community through its local art gallery, Contemporary Art Spaces Mandurah (CASM) where I volunteered as a gallery assistant, attended numerous art workshops, participated in many exhibitions and secured a year-long studio residency there in 2016, followed by my first solo exhibition in 2017.
Over the ensuing years, along with my beautiful wife Margaret (the most perfect holidaying companion one could ever hope for), we spent much of our time camping and hiking all over our magnificent State of Western Australia, from its stunning southern coastline right up to the starkly entrancing Kimberly region in the north, a distance apart of 2,500 kilometres, not counting of course the hundreds of diversions we made into other destinations along our way.
On these marvellous excursions I sketch and photograph, preserve the amazing visions we encounter, write daily at each location, gather memories and stories – thus collecting a huge booty of inspiration to take home to put to use in my art practice.
In this year of 2023 I intend to devote more of my time to my painting and become proactive in presenting my work more widely. The full development of this website will be my first task.
